Hi this is Tierro, lead guitarist and co-founder of the band Kannal. I wanted to extend my deep appreciation and thank you personally for all of your support over the years for Kannal's music.
Kan'Nal is officially taking an hiatus for a undisclosed amount of time so I thought some explanation would be appropriate. Not all band members were comfortable making the sacrifices necessary to continue on as we were. So a break from "Kannal" was necessary. It is tough to say if the band will play together again in the same form as it was from 2001- 2009 but I sure hope so as those years and those shows were some of the most challenging, fulfilling, and spectacular times in my life, and the lives of my band mates. The support from our friends, fans and family was beyond mind blowing and If I could I would thank every one of you in person. There is no doubt that Kannal has been a powerful experience for us all, and I will miss our times together. The future of the group is ... we will always be family, we will love and support each other through our individual and group endeavors, and will come back together to call in the Kannal vibe if and when the timing is right. Until then we get to rest ... ahhhh.
The members of Kannal are as close as ever and the release of the pressure or touring has allowed us all to relax into our individual creative projects. Tzol is on tour with electronica producer Adam Freland, RODO, TERE, and GIL have a very cool new band called INTI www.radiointi.com - Akayate is dancing up a storm in Austin TX, Aaron is in Australia working with permaculture, and I am working hard on a film score, producing, mixing, and expect to have a Tierro SOLO CD out by the end of this year.
So a Big thanks to all of you! It has been an honor and an incredible ride. I hope we can all stay in touch and continue to encourage each other to be hopeful, courageous and joyous as we walk the red road together. I wanted to share with you a KANNAL VIDEO created and submitted by John Hartman. This really captured the Kannal Vibe and was shot in 8 mm film! It takes some time to buffer but is well worth checking out! Please share and froward this to anyone you think would enjoy it.... Thanks John !

Dearest Kan’Nal Family,
I am writing this letter as a follow-up to the recent email sent by Tierro, and to share my deepest, personal, gratitude and thanks while telling of the coming transition of the band we all know as Kan’Nal. As most of you now know, the band has decided that we have reached a point where the pursuit of our individual visions for art has become necessary to enable creation to maintain its dynamic flow. Over the years, as a unit, Kan’Nal was a tribe that extended far beyond the stage, powered as much by the support of our artistic off-stage family as it was the magical musicians and creators on-stage.
For the band, the most difficult part of making this decision was not pursuing our individual projects, but knowing that we will not be able to experience the energy we felt most profoundly with you, our family and fans. What made Kan’Nal unique was not just the music, but the unbridled creative force that you, our fans, represented for all. We were, and always will be, a family defined not by our music, but a music that is defined by our family. For this reason, choosing to go on our own individual ways is incredibly difficult, and also a bit sad. Sad not that the band is rested, but sad that we may not see the same faces in the places we have grown to love.
However, this letter is not intended as a goodbye, nor is it a letter of regret. When we first started Kan’Nal it was always our mission to inspire creativity, to encourage everyone to join in the band, not merely watch from the side. Kan’Nal is as much the music on the CD as it is the dancer in the crowd. Personally, and for this very reason, I expect to see Kan’Nal many more times… singing in the crowd, painting on stage, drumming by the fire. It reminds me of our beautiful Mayan elder Aum-rak, who once shared a saying that we would all chant in unison: “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for!”
And so, here we are. Tierro, Gilly, Rodo, Teresita, Aaron, Brock, Akayate,Mateo, Tzol, and the countless thousands of others that have defined Kan’Nal, manifesting and blooming into the new horizon. For me, that horizon is a new album project called The Burned. Drawing on the inspirations of my years in Kan’Nal, my journeys into the desserts of Mexico and the magnificence of life and music, The Burned is a true expression of myself, Kurt Baumann (myspace.com/theburnedmusic). As a member of Kan’Nal, I carried the name Tzol, as Kan’Nal was as much about my personal journey as it was about the journey of the band. As I enter new territories and explore new dynamics in music and art, I felt the right thing to do is leave the name Tzol with the band I love so dearly. I hope you’ll enjoy The Burned as much as I enjoyed making it. I also hope that we can share in the experience of this music together; your participation in the music we create has been, and always will be, the inspiration behind my doing what I do.
The members of Kan’Nal will always be my closest friends and family; as such, I cannot be upset that the time has come for individuals to break free from Kan’Nal and establish their own dynamic. The tie that binds Kan’Nal can never be severed by the simple desires of an individual to create their own space, to nurture their own manifestation, to plant their own seeds of expression. To do so would be contrary to everything Kan’Nal stands for, oneness through art. Kan’Nal could never be one album, one band or one person.
The new Kan’Nal horizon is an expansion of art, anchored not by one group, but a village of artists and music. I hope all of you will join me in supporting the many creative projects forthcoming, and those we’ve come to know and love: Inti, the funk explosion anchored by Rodo, Terre and Gilly; Lunar Fire, the magical trance band featuring the Kan’Nal crew; Tierro’s amazing forthcoming solo projects; The Burned, my solo project; Freeland’s, electronic/rock project; Akayate’s dance creations; Brock’s indigenous groove… and the countless others who have joined in this amazing journey we came to know as Kan’Nal. I wish I could name each and every one of you, but there is not enough space in any one letter (we all know who you are, and you know we love you).
Like all wonderful experiences in life, the time of passage is one that brings gratitude and thanks for what was, and optimism and hope for what is yet to come. Today, more than anything, I wanted to say to all of you, the Kan’Nal family, that I am deeply grateful to have participated in this amazing ride with each and every one of you; I cannot wait to see you in the crowd at our new manifestations! This is not goodbye for any of us, merely a new hello. The tie that binds this family will not be severed by the changing face of the future. We are all Kan’Nal… the future is bright, and the music will go on!
With love and thanks,
Tzol
